West Norway
On our stop here we can see one of the spectacular sights of the Norwegian landscape. Rising 597 meters (2,010 feet) up from Lysefjorden, Prekestolen ('the pulpit') is flat as a floor on top, where you have a magnificent view. Prekestolen is located close to Stavanger, Norway's oil centra.
Our next stop up the long and craggy coast (3,420 km/ 2,125 mi) of Norway is the city under the seven hills, Bergen. To the left is the harbor of Bergen with the characteristic gabled houses of the Wharf, which dates back to the Hanseatic time.
The primary mountain region within Bergen kommune is Gullfjellet, with Gullfjellstoppen as the highest peak (987m). A number of lower peaks are found on - or connects logically to the Gullfjellet massif. Another significant mountain plateau, Ulriken - Vidden - Rundemanen, is found just east of the city of Bergen - Norway's 2nd largest city.
Bergen has a long history, and its inhabitants are truly patriots. It rains a lot here, statistically in almost 200 days each year, but it doesn't seem to affect the citizens feelings for their town. Luckily, most of the rainy days are during the winter, and if your going there in the summer, chances are that the weather will be decent nice. Here also you will find largest and most modern aquarium in Northern Europe - Bergen Aquarium which is worth visiting.
From the city of Bergen we now move on to one of the most popular tourist attractions in Norway, Geiranger. The fjords of western Norway are narrow, but they stretch far inland, as here in Geiranger, were the tourists can admire the mountains from the deck of a cruise ship. At the mouth of the world famous Geirangerfjord lies Norway's fisheries capital and minimetropolis, Ålesund.
Moving further north, you are bound to come by Trondheim some time. Since Norway is a narrow country around this area (squeezed between Sweden and the ocean), this city has proved to be a good place for gatherings of vikings. Tronheim celebrated its 1000 years Anniversary in 1997 - it is the oldest city of Norway. Nowadays, the city is known for the Norwegian Institute of Technology (which in connection with SINTEF is the leading research company in Norway), and its very good student environment.
