If you want to learn something about Norwegian history you can check out Stavanger’s archaeological museum. This can be combined with Jernaldergården (the Iron Age farm). This is a reconstruction of a farm built in the Iron Age. If you go there it is worth contacting a guide so that he/she can talk you through it. This farm was rebuilt in the 70s based on findings that date back to 300-500 AD.

The Museum follows a profile of environmental archaeology and interdisciplinary study, with a scientific staff that includes representatives from archaeology, the natural sciences and modern cultural history. Karmøy boasts four museums that relate its history through the past few centuries. The Mælandsgården museum is located in Skudeneshavn Old Town, and tells the saga of the town that grew from the herring fisheries. Åkrehamn Coastal Museum and Karmøy Fishery Museum tell the story about the coastal culture and of the fisheries that were so important to Karmøy.

Here at the Bergen Aquarium you will meet famous local personalities like Vitus, Dodraugen and Ping Kong. Bergen Art Museum three collection´s comprises masterpieces of Munch, 18th century interiors frm Bergen, Norwegian and International art from the 14th century to contemporary art.

Siljustøl is one of Norway's most special artist homes. The residence is situated in picturesque surroundings and was the composer Harald Sæverud's great source of inspiration. His studio, grand piano and personal effects lie just as he left them at his death in 1992.

Outdoor museum with over 40 Bergen style wooden houses along streets, market places and alleys and with interiors from the time of our great grandparents and great-great-grandparents. Bergen is known for its old wooden houses, and at the Old Bergen Museum there is a whole cluster of them. Some of them are on their original sites, but the majority have been moved from other parts of Bergen.

A museum of sculptures which exhibits nearly all the works of the sculptor Ingebrigt Vik. In Øystese is almost everything the sculptor Ingebrigt Vik made gathered. He worked as an artist for only fifteen years yet still managed to establish himself as one of the most important sculptors in Norway. When he died in 1927 he left his whole artistic production to his birthplace Øystese.

Follow the signposted turn-off from the highway between Stavanger and Haugesund. The first mention of Utstein is made in Torbjørn Hornkloves old Norse lay about the battle of Hafrsfjord in 872.

The landscape in Etne is fertile and changing. The area has one of west Norway's best salmon fishing rivers, picturesque, little farming villages and great stretches of wild, beautiful scenery. New life has arrived in Etne village. Over the past few years, several new tourism companies have set up offices in the area, and Etne has a lot to offer its visitors.

Bergen is surrounded by one of the world’s most spectacular tourist attractions – the Norwegian Fjords, which have now been included on UNESCO´s World Heritage List. Ulriken (643 metres above sea level) is the highest of the seven mountains (“de syv fjell”) that surround Bergen. Bergen has given a warm welcome to its visitors for more than 900 years.

The history of the glacier

The Ice Age - 20,000 years ago, vast glaciers covered most of Northern Europe. Then, as the temperatures began to rise, the ice melted and revealed a hidden land.

Østerbø Turisthytte is located in the valley of Aurlandsdalen on highway no. 50, and is the perfect base for long treks in the mountains and hill walks. Accommodation in rooms or cabins, and delicious, homemade Norwegian food.

The major highways in Bergen are E16 and 1 which run North/South and are the major routes to Trondheim and Stavanger respectively. The major West highway is 555 leading to the island of Sotra. The East highway 580 leads to Voss and eventually Oslo.

Lærdal is situated at the head of the Sognefjord, halfway between East Norway and West Norway. You can reach it by car, bus or air, or by boat, for instance across the beautiful Nærøyfjord. The Lærdal valley is located in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, western Norway.

Hardangerjord is situated centrally in the heart of Western Norway and is easy to reach from most arrival points in Southern Norway. There are many direct flights from several European cities to Bergen, and Bergen is only a 1 hour drive from Hardangerfjord. It takes between 2-2.5 hours to drive from Haugesund, 3.5 hours from Stavanger and 5 hours from Kristiansand, and Oslo.

Hardanger has inspired a lot of Norwegian and foreign artists. The composer Edvard Grieg had his own cabin by Hardangerfjorden, and one of the most famous Norwegian masterpieces is the painting "Bridal Voyage on the Hardanger Fjord" by Tidemand and Gude. Hardanger is still the symbol of national romanticism.

Eidfjord district is right at the head of the Hardangerfjord. Tourist road Rv7, the fastest and most scenic east-west route, traverses the district. In Eidfjord, you can take an interesting sightseeing tour or just relax beside the fjord, wander around, enjoy lunch and visit the excellent Gallery N. Bergslien.

The beautiful stave church in Røldal was one of the most important churches in western Norway in the middle ages. The church was probably built in the 12th century and decorated inside in the 16th century. During the Middle Ages Røldal was a major meeting place for pilgrims, next to the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.

A valley with traditional mountain farms (seter) near Røldal. At the very end of the valley, you can see Valldalsdammen (700 m above sea level), height 90 m. Valldalen is one of the most frequently used gateways for hikes on Hardangervidda, such as to Sandfloeggi, the highest point on the plateau, 1,719 m a.s.l. Hunting and fishing opportunities. The fruit and cider walk Lekve – Syse – Hakestad. The four farms that constitute the fruit and cider walk have a south-facing and sunny situation in the middle of the fruit farming village of Ulvik. The farms are within walking distance of each other, only 1,5-2,5 km from the village centre. The farms offer exciting tastes of farm produce and culture. Booking by appointment.

Folgefonna Summer Ski Centre is situated on the glacier at 1,200 metres above sea level, 19 km from Jondal ferry quay. The ski lift is 1100 m long. Fine conditions for cross-country skiing, marked tracks to the top of the glacier at 1640 m above sea level. Snowboard, alpine- and cross-country slopes.

Folgefonni Breførarlag will take you on a walk on one of Norway`s coastal glaciers. If you are physically fit and over 12 years of age, Folgefonna Breførarlag welcomes you to join them. Three daily arrangements available; Blue ice hike in Juklavassbreen, Sundalsvegen, and an educational walk along the edge of the glacier.

Opplev Odda invites you to a spectacular experience in the Tyssedal mountains! You will have the opportunity to feel how the everyday life was for the navvy people who built the waterpower stations, when they secured mountain constructions, founded the concrete fundament, hand carved bricks and established the penstock. Hardanger Breføring offer daily guided tours on Buer glacier. The trips are suitable for everyone over the age of 12 years who are physically fit. The first part of the trip goes through beautiful cultural landscape up to the glacier before climbing to the glacier face and walking on the lower Buer glacier up towards Reinanuten.

Odda was northern Europe's most popular tourist destination in 1904. The tourists came from all over Europe to experience the impressive nature attractions that Odda has to offer. The waterfalls in the Odda valley, the Folgefonna and Buer glaciers - and the two unique mountain formations at the centre of the valley, Ringedalen; Trolltunga and Preikestolen.

On the east side on Hardangervidda you will find a fantastic hiking area. Husedalen in Kinsarvik, with its breathtaking scenery and waterfalls, is one of the most spectacular gateways to the Hardanger Plateau.

Trail leading along the river Opo. At the very end of the valley you can experience the waterfalls at close range. Bjødnebøkse is situated on the left hand sidde. Skrikjo, situated on the right side has a fall of about 400 m. Approx. 1 1/2 hrs walk from Lofthus. Map at the tourist office.

Troll Train, which runs on wheels, running a 50-minute guided tour of the Eidfjord area. From the train you can experience Eidfjord its lush scenery and culture of taxes, blah. The village of Eidfjord is the innermost village on the Hardanger Fjord in the south-western Norwegian county of Hordaland. From the village centre you can walk along Lægreidsvegen past Eidfjord New Church, and the Old Church. Through a farmyard, follow Tråavegen, through Øvrehagen and then Kyrkjevegen back to the centre.

Hæreid - Viking Graves

Eidfjord is home to the Hardangervidda Nature Centre, which offers visitors displays of the fauna and flora of the Hardangervidda, and a special film of the mountain plateau. The village’s history dates back to the Iron Age and Viking eras, and Iron Age and Viking graves can be seen by the road at Hereid, a short walk from the village centre.

Start from the bridge that leads to Statkraft on the southern side of the river. You then follow the river through beautiful countryside with prepared fishing spots – suitable for the disabled. 3 km.
