If you want to learn something about Norwegian history you can check out Stavanger’s archaeological museum. This can be combined with Jernaldergården (the Iron Age farm). This is a reconstruction of a farm built in the Iron Age. If you go there it is worth contacting a guide so that he/she can talk you through it. This farm was rebuilt in the 70s based on findings that date back to 300-500 AD.

Hardangerjord is situated centrally in the heart of Western Norway and is easy to reach from most arrival points in Southern Norway. There are many direct flights from several European cities to Bergen, and Bergen is only a 1 hour drive from Hardangerfjord. It takes between 2-2.5 hours to drive from Haugesund, 3.5 hours from Stavanger and 5 hours from Kristiansand, and Oslo.

The beautiful stave church in Røldal was one of the most important churches in western Norway in the middle ages. The church was probably built in the 12th century and decorated inside in the 16th century. During the Middle Ages Røldal was a major meeting place for pilgrims, next to the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.

The Monks Steps - Nosi

Forest road/path from Lofthus to Nosi (950 m above sea level). This walk, to a fantastic viewpoint above Lofthus (called Nosi or “the Nose”). This is one of the gateways to the Hardangervidda plateau. At 650-700 metres, you'll find the monk steps made out of stone, probably laid by monks who settled in Opedal in the 13th century. Elvadalen - The Waterfalls

Trail leading along the river Opo. At the very end of the valley you can experience the waterfalls at close range. Bjødnebøkse is situated on the left hand sidde. Skrikjo, situated on the right side has a fall of about 400 m. Approx. 1 1/2 hrs walk from Lofthus. Map at the tourist office.

The walk is mostly along lanes, passing through the orchards. You can extend it to the Skrelhaugen Folk Museum, which is a collection of preserved wooden farm buildings.

The village of Eidfjord is the innermost village on the Hardanger Fjord in the south-western Norwegian county of Hordaland. From the village centre you can walk along Lægreidsvegen past Eidfjord New Church, and the Old Church. Through a farmyard, follow Tråavegen, through Øvrehagen and then Kyrkjevegen back to the centre.

Path to the bottom of the waterfall. Park your car near the uppermost opening of Mabotunnelen. Follow the old road towards the river. Turn on to the path and walk up the valley. Some of the paths leads across stone screes; remember to wear appropriate footwear and watch out for rock slides! About 1,5 hrs there and back.
