Sandnes - the Bicycle Town

Why not devote your holiday to an impressive journey along the west coast? The North Sea Road is the holiday route that takes you from the charms of southern Norway to the flat Jæren area and then on into the dramatic landscape of the Norwegian fjord country. The coastal area lies there waiting to offer you unforgettable experiences. The feel of the fresh sea air on your face is just as rewarding whether you are swimming from the sunny sandy beaches or walking in stormy weather.
Join us on a fascinating and informative walk through the industrial town of Sandnes, where you will learn of its history, its heyday of bicycle production, milling and brickworks, which provided the foundation for the town we see today. Norway's no. 1 bicycle town, Sandnes , is renowned for its almost 100-year old manufacture of bicycles. However, clay was the actual basis for the development of Sandnes town. The first brickworks was established in 1789. The district had massive deposits of clay that could be exploited and brickworks were built one after the other along the shores of the fjord. Milling was yet another industrial success story. Nowadays there is only one mill in operation.
The view from Dalsnuten (323 m) leaves even the most discerning of mountain wanderer simply breathless. A marvellous panorama looks out over Sandnes, the fjord realm of Ryfylke, the sweeping expanse of Jæren and the North Sea beyond. Rogaland Arboretum is a park renowned for its luxuriant vegetation. 15 km of paths have been laid through the park and there are several dams that set the scene for a rewarding morning or afternoon in beautiful surroundings for young and old.
