Røldal Stave Church
The beautiful stave church in Røldal was one of the most important churches in western Norway in the middle ages. The church was probably built in the 12th century and decorated inside in the 16th century. During the Middle Ages Røldal was a major meeting place for pilgrims, next to the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The medieval crucifix above the altarpiece was said to have healing powers, and well into the Protestant period sick people made pilgrimages to the church. The building material is timber from the valley.
