Grand Hotel

When it comes to hotels in Oslo, the Grand Hotel is an institution in its own right. It stands proud directly in the heart of the city’s main street Karl Johan. Henrik Ibsen came here to sit on the shady veranda and enjoy his highballs at the end of the 19th Century. This is where Barack Obama stayed when he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. What Obama did not do, however, was sink into a deep sofa under the glass dome of Palmen, the hotel’s French inspired café and green oasis, and feel the expectations of the outside world being lifted from his shoulders. Had he done that, he would have been surrounded by fresh plants, iron hat racks, chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, marble walls, plush, burgundy pillows, and sunk his presidential teeth into the Palmen confectioner’s specialty: Napoleon cake that no one ever forgets after one bite. Then he would have sat back to drift.
