Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre

The Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre can thank the wellknown architecture firm Snøhetta for its new popularity.

The viewing pavilion wasn’t even finished before someone came knocking at the door of Jo Skorem, leader of the Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre. It was a journalist from the New York Times, in Norway to do a story about Snøhetta. He wanted to see the architecture group’s latest project, which was on the Tverrfjell mountain. An Italian TV team came knocking with the same request. And more followed after the building opened in June. International attention is not an everyday matter for the Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre. As Skorem says: “It was a stroke of genius to hire Snøhetta.”

The pavilion is made of wood, steel and glass and is, according to project leader and landscape architect Knut Bjørgum, “a contrast between a robust outer shell and an organic inner core.” The wooden core was shaped the way wind and water shapes mountains, ice or snow and forms an amphitheatre for 35 people. The building provides a protected gathering place for visitors, who can enjoy the spectacular view through large panoramic windows.

It is one of Norway’s newest tourist attractions. Just like Snøhetta.
