Norwegian Glacier Museum
The history of the glacier
The Ice Age - 20,000 years ago, vast glaciers covered most of Northern Europe. Then, as the temperatures began to rise, the ice melted and revealed a hidden land.
The village of Fjærland forms a meeting place for the Sognefjord and the Jostedal glacier, the largest mainland glacier in Europe. The arms of the Jostedal glacier reach all the way down to some 60 metres above sea level, and the glacier moves around 2 metres every day. Norsk Bremuseum (The Norwegian Glacier Museum) in Fjærland really teaches you about the life of the glacier. It takes you to the very heart of the glacier and brings thousands of years of European glacial history to life. You will learn why the glacier ice is blue and how the Norwegian fjords were created. You can enjoy a unique film of the Jostedal glacier, and experiment with thousand-year-old ice in the museum, which was designed by prize-winning architect Sverre Fehn.
