The Monks Steps - Nosi

The Monks Steps - Nosi

Forest road/path from Lofthus to Nosi (950 m above sea level). This walk, to a fantastic viewpoint above Lofthus (called Nosi or “the Nose”). This is one of the gateways to the Hardangervidda plateau. At 650-700 metres, you'll find the monk steps made out of stone, probably laid by monks who settled in Opedal in the 13th century. Lofthus - Nosi return: approx 4 hrs walk. The walk includes the climb up the Monks’ Steps, 616 stone steps built in the 13th century by monks who came out from York and apparently brought the first fruit trees with them. There is nothing left of the monastery itself, which was on the site of the Opedal farm on the edge of the village.

If you walk a bit further you will reach the look out point Nosi - the nose. 4 hours round trip. Map available at the tourist information Office. You can choose either to take the mountain road or a trail from Lofthus. This is one of the gate ways to Hardangervidda. The area around Lofthus produces 80% of Norway’s fruit harvest, mostly apples but also pears, plums and cherries.
