Lofoten Islands

MAELSTROM AND COASTAL CAVES, Lofoten Islands

There is a place on Earth where the Sun never sets, the Northern lights never cease to amaze, and the landscape changes constantly, the wind never stops blowing and the people always smile. These are the Lofoten.

This Norwegian archipelago lies 300 km beyond the polar circle, and is often called “mini-Norway”. During the winter-spring period, the smell which dominates the islands is the scent of dried fish. The sea off the Lofoten coast from January to April has been a cod-fishing area for a thousand years.

Nyvågar Rorbuhotell is a modern "rorbu" cabin resort built up around the idea of the genuine rorbu cabin environment that the fishermen lived in during the Lofoten Fishery. Our 30 rorbu cabins, all of which maintain the same high standard and have 2 bedrooms with 2 beds in each of them, were built on the site of North Norway's oldest town, Vågar. Hence the name Nyvågar - New Vågar. In the main building you will find the Lorchstua restaurant, reflecting the fine taste of the squires, together with a pleasant quayside pub, function rooms in the rustic Lofoten style, and meeting rooms. Outdoor table service on the quayside. After a chilly but thrilling day on the seas of Lofoten, you can relax in our quayside sauna. Excellent harbour facilities and boat hire service in a marvellous scenic setting. Our neighbours are the Lofoten Aquarium, the Lofoten Museum and the Espolin Gallery. It is 11 km to Svolvær Airport and 7 km to express passenger boat services and the Coastal Voyage docks.

These are reasons for being just here. When walking along the shacks of Nyvågar, youre virtually passing along paths of some 6000 years of mankind and sea history. The first city in northern Norway was right here. The northern light may suddenly become the storyteller here, with dancing colours in winter nights. And also during the summer days, which turn into that dream we always have inside. While the sun never sets..

Lofoten has an abundant selection of birds. We meet birds from the forest, moors, highlands, sea and ocean, and many species which migrate past Lofoten every spring and autumn. The white-tailed eagle flourishes in Lofoten, and the area has one of the world´s largest stocks. Most sea bird species are found in this region: razorbill, guillemot, cormorant, kittiwake and the characteristic puffin, just to mention a few. Especially the farthest islands of Værøy and Røst are renowned for their bird colonies and bird rocks. Hundreds of thousands of puffins and other sea birds can be heard and seen here, joined in a colourful orchestra.

Top attraction:

  • The Lofoten wall - the archipelago looks like a closed wall when seen from elevated points around Bodo or when arriving from the sea, some 100 km. long, and 800-1,000 m. high.
  • The island of Moskenes with the Moskenes maelstrom, considered to be one of the most dangerous maelstroms in the world, and the coastal Kollhellaren Cave with some 3000 year old cave paintings.
  • Vestvaagoy with the archeological finds from the Iron Age and the Viking Age.
  • The Viking longhouse (83 m) at Borg (the largest known longhouse).
  • The picturesque fishing village of Nusfjord.
  • The picturesque villages of Eggum and Unstad, situated at the foot of tall mountains, with the scenic pebbled beach at Eggum.
  • Henningsvaer - the most important fishing village at Lofoten.
  • Skomvaer Lighthouse.

Today, Top Lofoten consists of the following accommodations and resorts: Henningsvær Bryggehotel, Nyvågar Rorbuhotell, Kabelvåg Hotel and Stamsund Rorbuer. We are specialists in organizing and planning holiday activities and adventures all year round, using our accommodations as your base.
