Hordamuseet folk museum
Hordamuseet is the folk museum for the Bergen district, founded 1945. Here you can get a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the rural areas around Bergen, where most families lived of farming and fishing. Hordamuseet is a regional museum with 50 years of cultural history for Bergen Folk museum for agriculture, fishing, archaeology, arts and crafts.
Horda Museum gives a unique insight into the fascinating history of Hordaland, the region around Bergen. Its permanent exhibition "The fisher-farmer over one thousand years" has an interesting collection of traditional objects and pictures of this region. In the open-air museum, you can visit around 20 buildings typical of the district such as hamlets, a general store, a boathouse and a schoolhouse. Here you can really experience how people lived and worked and get a great picture of the way of life in those days. There is also a number of memorials well worth a visit.
The main building has a special room with ten tapestries portraying the medieval legend of "Åsmund Frægdajeva", created by Ragna Breivik. In the outdoor museum there are 20 traditional buildings from different parts of the district, which gives an insight into living conditions, traditional building customs and techniques.
The Norwegian Museum of Transport, Hordaland has an exhibition here with construction tools and road-building equipment from 1880-1940. The museum also has an exhibition hall for temporary exhibitions and a café. Hordamuseet has an idyllic location on the banks of the Fana fjord, 15 km from Bergen centre and 10 km from Bergen's airport, Flesland. The museum lies close to well known and popular attractions like Troldhaugen (the home of Edward Grieg), Fantoft stave church, the medieval stone church at Fana, Lysøen (the home of Ole Bull) and the cloister ruins at Lyse. Next to the museum lies one of the most popular beaches in the district.
Hordamuseet has one of the largest collection of traditional wooden boats in Norway. The boats comes from the counties of Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane.

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 12.00-15.00, Wednesdays 12.00-18.00, Saturdays and Sundays 12.00-16.00. Closed Mondays. Otherwise open by appointment.
