Hardangervidda from Odda

Hardangervidda from Odda

The vast mountain plateau of Hardangervidda is one of Europe's largest. It is also home to Northern Europe’s largest stock of reindeer. This is a popular spot for many challenging outdoor activities. The great polar explorers Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen, both used Hardangervidda to plan and prepare their many expeditions. There is an abundance of well-marked routes for walking, hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing. Every year at Whitsuntide, you can join an organised skiing trip and cross the Folgefonna from fjord to fjord. To the east and south of Odda is the Hardangervidda National Park, a beautiful area of mountain plain with excellent walking and Europe's largest flock of wild reindeer.

TyssoViaFerrata follows the water from the mountains of Hardangervidda all the way down to the Hardanger fjord. There is no other place in the world where water is as important for so many industries and producers as in Tyssedal. In mountain lakes, rivers and waterfalls, the water is a food source as well as a tourist attraction. Glacier climbing in the Folgefonna national park has become a concept - maybe because you can seize the moment both in summer and winter. Folgefonna Summer Ski Resort is only a 90-minute drive from Odda. Here you can go skiing and it will be so warm that you can take your shirt off while a soft warm summer wind gently caresses your skin.

Skjeggedal above Tyssedal and Valldalen in Røldal are both excellent starting points for hikes on the Hardangervidda Plateau. Numerous high-quality DNT-cabins where you can stay overnight. Please contact the Tourist Office for maps and information.
