How did the equator end up at Hardangervidda?

The Hardangervidda National Park is the largest national park in Norway and the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe. The exhibitions at Hardangervidda Nature Center and museum, Eidfjord are based around the Hardangervidda plateau and takes you through 550 million years of geological history, right from when Norway was south of the equator. The oldest rock types on the Hardangervidda plateau are between 1100 and 1700 million years old and reveal that Hardanger- vidda once formed part of the ocean floor.

Hardangervidda is rich in animal wildlife and is the southernmost outpost of the arctic fox, snowy owl and many arctic animal and plant species. The plateau is home to the largest herd of wild reindeer in Europe and when you arrive at the centre you will come face to face with a herd of these majestic reindeer. Through an interactive program about botany and zoology you can follow several animals in their quest for survival, reproduction and rearing of their young.
