The church is built to the same dimensions and in the same architectural style as the original from ca. 1170 that is now housed in Trøndelag Folkemuseum. The stave church’s unbelievable acoustics and atmosphere offer the opportunity for musical, cultural and spiritual experiences.
Haltdalen has a long history as a church. The first church - Haltdalen church - was built around 1170. We do not know with certainty where it stood, but most likely it stood up on the hillside above the present church.
The current church was completed in 1881 and the old church was demolished. The old stave church was preserved and handed over to the Company Science Museum in Trondheim. It was first rebuilt in Kalvskinnet - on the museum's empty. In 1937 it was moved to Trøndelag Folk Museum at Sverresborg where it has since stood.
