History Of Flekkefjord Museum

(Taken from Norway Post)
Flekkefjord Museum was founded 1n 1924 as a result of a bequest in the will of Miss Anna Wahl. She left her collection of furniture, costumes, clothing etc. to a future museum. The premises were formerly a private residence for ship masters and tradesmen. The house was built in 1724, although the original house was only half the size of the present building. You can see a large iron stove from Nes Ironworks. This figurestove is one of very few surviving examples of this type. The figure represents the Roman fertility goodess Ceres.

The clothes display bears witness of the wealth of the upper classes of the town in the 18th and 19th centuries. You may also view a collection of porcelain. A dinner set display comes from Leeds Pottery and is of a type known as 'Pierced Leeds Cream Ware'. It dates from approx. 1970. In ' Sjøbodene' is there a prehistorical exhibition. You can also watch the exhibition 'Amsterdam the Dutch city on Norwegian Timber' This exhibition shows some cultural relation between Holland and Norway in the 17th century, timber trading emigration and the city life the immigrants met in Amsterdam.
