Today Sør-Gjæslingan is a monument to former greatness, and it has been designated a national heritage conservation area. You can sense the history in the walls and a visit to Sør-Gjæslingan is a memory for life. This was once one of the greatest and most important fishing villages south of Lofoten.
In Sør-Gjæslingan you will hear the tale of Sea-Sara, a woman who lived around the turn of the 18th century and was the most skilful and fearless of all the fishermen and women on the Folla sea in her days. The legend about her deeds as a fisherwomen, pilot and lifesaver live on in the present day.
A collection of approx. 80 islands, islets and reefs are extremely out of foal, with the ocean right in from the west. The vegetation consists of heather, peat and grass. Home weather, the largest island is just 600 m long.
As a fishing village in Southern Gjæslingan known for hundreds of years ago. A natural harbor, and at times plenty of fish occurrences was probably the cause of the first settlement.
Stone age discovery may indicate that there have been people in Gjæslingan very early. It referred to that in the beginning of the 1900s. Thus we are in no doubt that fishing and hunting having left people here.
