The main building of Drammen´s museum is located in the centre of the city on the Strømsø side of the river. In earlier years this was an elegant country house on the magnificent landed property Marienlyst or the manor complex of Old Marienlyst which dates from 1770. Most of this area is nowadays used for sports activities, but the museum itself lies in an intimate green lung – shielded from the huzzle and buzzle of the outside world. The new exhibition pavilion with a café and a museum shop are located in the garden. The Museum encompasses both the rural and the urban culture of Buskerud County.

The museum can offer a full range of museum exhibitions. The department of fine art has one of the finest collections of Norwegian painting dating from 180. The main building contains rose-painted wooden chests and cupboards from the inland valleys Hallingdal and Numedal, town furniture, Norwegian 18th century baroque silver, Norwegian and northern European glass, and a historical exhibition of Drammen. The impressions are many and overwhelming. And in the Lyche Pavilion temporary art exhibitions are put on throughout the year.
