Ålesund - the Art Nouveau City

Art Nouveau Style

At the mouth of the world famous Geirangerfjord lies Norway's fisheries capital and minimetropolis, Ålesund.

The town is internationally renowned for its distinctive Art Nouveau architecture abundant in turrets, spires and imaginative ornamentation. A wander through the town centre also reveals a lively urban scene with pleasant restaurants and cafés, and the picturesque Brosundet canal with its fishing boats.

The Art Nouveau (or "new style") architecture, The Atlantic Sea Park aquarium, the Geirangefjord, idyllic islands on the edge of the ocean. This coastal town is one of the world’s largest shipment ports for Klipfish (split, dried, salted cod) and it has a busy fisheries harbour in the middle of the town. There are great opportunities for fishing, boating trips, hiking on marked trails in the mountains, cycling on idyllic small islands on the ocean’s edge, bird watching or diving. It is also only a short distance to the world heritage area The Geirangerfjord. The Geirangerfjord is so unique it has been included on UNESCO’s world heritage list. At the entrance to the fjord lies the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund, named Norway’s most beautiful city. The combination is unbeatable – and highlights are thick on the ground!

"There is probably no Art Nouveau environment in Europe which is quite so characteristic as Ålesund. Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt or Avenue Louise in Brussels are impressive, but nothing can compare to Ålesund when it comes to extent and diversity." Ålesund is exeptional amongst Norwigen cities. Hardly anywhere else has such an extensive and complete environment been preserved, providing us with a unique example of a concentrated city in a small area, and what this once meant.

Ålesund is just a couple of hours away from the unique world heritage area of Geiranger. The trip offers great experiences in itself, whether you travel with a boat along the fjords or with a car/bus on spectacular roads through the landscape of fjords, valleys and mountains.

Ålesund & Sunnmøre is the perfect place to explore some of Norway's most famous natural and cultural attractions. Ålesund's beautiful Art Nouveau architecture is known far and wide. The myriad of turrets, spires and beautiful ornamentation that give the town its distinctive character are like something from a fairytale. Sunnmøre's profusion of fjords, small fishing communities, island gems and majestic mountains is just waiting to bowl you over. The sheer variety of experiences on offer, gives you the freedom to choose just the experience you are looking for - all year round.

Aalesund is internationally famous for its distinctive architecture in the “Art Noveau” style (Jugendstil) with towers, spires and imaginative decoration on the house facades. This particular style of architecture in the centre of Aalesund is a result of the catastrophic fire in 1904 that completely destroyed the centre of the town. The architects that took part in the rebuilding of Aalesund were quite young and Norwegian. They were influenced by the modern architectural styles of the times in addition to being inspired by national romantic impulses. After the reconstruction, Aalesund has acquired a unique place in Norwegian and international history.

The Atlantic Sea-Park, one of the largest aquariums in Northern Europe, is beautifully situated by the waterfront and provides a fascinating insight into the multitude of life beneath the waves. Take a stroll by the Sunnmøre Open Air Museum, with more than 50 old houses in beautiful surroundings and an impressive boat collection.

The beauty of the town can be appreciated from the town mountain Aksla, which affords a breathtaking view of the town and the entire region with its mountains, islands and fjords.
